Day4-Saturday

SiteVisit-2017
Day 4 - 23rd September

To Nkokoto. Walked  to the village to see the market where some of the ladies who had  borrowed from the microfinance scheme were selling their wares – mainly  fruit and vegetables but also one  stall was selling baby things.   Visited the original borehole, busy place and delivering good clean  fresh water. Then visited the clinic and was shown the interior although  no clinician was in residence. The nurse was in charge. We were then  taken to her house to be shown its appalling condition in which she was  meant to live. It needs complete refurbishment to remove the  ants that  have eaten so much of it away. I  asked for costings which I was handed  later and this is a project the Link might wish to consider.
Mary Henry
I asked to see someone who had been given a sewing machine at the end of their FDC course. When we reached the house she was ill so couldn’t admit us (!!??) We walked to the foundations of the new teacher’s house which we will be asked to part finance its completion, then after a visit to the quarry where kokoto (stone) was extracted to build the railway during the German occupation in the early 1900s, we attended the village meeting. After the usual pleasantries and introductions, the villagers listed their requests:

1. - Extend the electricity supply to all parts of the village;
2. - Build water tower and pipes to feed water to centre of village;
3. - Houses for teachers;
4. - More help for women in setting up their businesses,
      i.e. continue with microfinance scheme;
5. - A car – for taking patients to hospital;
6. - Build a brick market for the women to trade and sell their
     goods in;
7. - A dam to stop the water running away in the rainy season;
8. - Another two boreholes
9. - Recreational facilities, e.g. footballs, volley ball, etc., for the young to play in their free time;
10 - More microfinance for graduates from the FDC to set up their own businesses;
(I am not making comments about each request in this paper but I think it will be clear which requests are possible projects for the future and which ones are out of the question)
